Meet Christy Cannon, CNM, WHNP
The gold standard in personalized hospital midwifery care
At The Midwife & More, Christy offers a rare level of care that blends clinical excellence, hospital safety, and deeply personal support. She is a dual-certified Certified Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, master’s trained through Georgetown University, with more than two decades of maternal and newborn experience behind the way she cares for women today.
Her background includes years in the NICU, attendance at thousands of deliveries, hands-on support for breastfeeding and newborn care, and hundreds of births personally guided as a midwife.
What makes Christy different is not just her credentials. It’s the way she brings them together. She offers women something that has become increasingly hard to find in modern maternity care: time, relationship, continuity, calm, and the feeling of being genuinely known. Instead of rushed appointments and transactional care, Christy has built a concierge-style model centered on education, trust, advocacy, and presence. Her clients aren’t treated like a chart, a room number, or a due date. They’re cared for as whole women, with individual concerns, preferences, fears, hopes, and intuition that deserve to be honored.
Christy’s philosophy is simple, but powerful. Birth should be comfortable, empowering, and informed. She believes women deserve to understand their options, participate in decisions, and feel respected at every stage of pregnancy, labor, birth, and recovery. Her role is not to take over the experience. Her role is to guide it with wisdom, skill, and a steady hand, so mothers can feel free enough to surrender to birth while knowing expert support is right there if needed.
Her experience spans hospital, birth center, and home birth settings, giving her an unusually broad understanding of what women need physically, emotionally, and clinically. She draws from both evidence-based medicine and the timeless principles of physiologic birth, creating an approach that is holistic without losing sight of safety. She supports movement, positioning, choice, the Golden Hour, informed consent, and a calm birth environment, while also working within the structure and resources of the hospital setting. For many women, it truly feels like the best of both worlds.
Christy also serves as a full-scope provider during pregnancy. That means she is available for far more than routine prenatal check-ins. She can draw labs on site, prescribe medications, evaluate common concerns that arise during pregnancy, and serve as a first point of contact for issues ranging from illness and UTI symptoms to mental health concerns and postpartum recovery questions. If additional care is needed, she collaborates closely with a trusted network of specialists, including an experienced OBGYN and a maternal-fetal medicine specialist who can provide formal ultrasounds on site.
Her hospital work is especially significant. After graduating from Georgetown, Christy spent years building relationships, teaching childbirth and postpartum classes, and persistently pursuing the opportunity to bring true midwifery care into Los Robles Hospital. In May 2025, that vision became reality when she began taking her own private clients there for delivery. That made her a trailblazer for hospital midwifery in the Thousand Oaks area and created a pathway for women who want a more personalized, low-intervention, relationship-based birth experience within the security of a hospital.
She grew up in a large family as the oldest girl of 13 children, helping care for her younger siblings and witnessing birth from an early age. Her mother loved pregnancy and childbirth and welcomed the family into those experiences. Christy was present for the births of her mother’s last four children, and when her youngest brother was born, the family doctor even let her help with the delivery. Those early experiences shaped the course of her life. They planted a deep respect for birth, women, babies, and the kind of care that can change a family forever.
Later, as a NICU nurse, Christy saw both the beauty and vulnerability of the newborn transition up close. She cared for countless families in those early days of life and developed a level of newborn awareness that few midwives can offer. Her perspective became even more personal when her own firstborn twins spent time in the NICU. That experience gave her not only technical knowledge, but a profound empathy for mothers navigating uncertainty, separation, and the emotional weight that can surround birth and postpartum recovery.
She also brings the lived experience of raising five children, including a child with Down syndrome, which adds further depth, tenderness, and understanding to the way she walks alongside families. This is part of why Christy is so trusted by women seeking more than standard prenatal care. She understands that excellent maternity care is not just about measurements, labs, and timing contractions. It is also about nervous system safety. It is about being heard. It is about feeling safe during vulnerable moments. It is about having a provider who remembers your preferences, explains your options clearly, and stays connected to you not only during pregnancy, but through labor, birth, and the postpartum period as well. That continuity changes everything.
Her model includes personalized prenatal care, customized birth planning, hands-on support in active labor and pushing, support through childbirth and the Golden Hour, postpartum follow-up the day after delivery and during the hospital stay, and additional postpartum visits in the weeks that follow. This level of continuity is rare, and it is one of the reasons her clients often describe their care as deeply reassuring, deeply personal, and entirely different from the standard system.
Christy is also known for bringing thoughtful, practical solutions into care in a way that feels both natural and medically grounded. From her custom birth oil blend used for perineal massage during labor, to supportive postpartum and pregnancy products, to her more whole-food-minded approach in areas where conventional care often feels impersonal, her practice reflects a wider philosophy: support the body well, reduce unnecessary stress, and create the conditions for better healing and better birth.
